REFERENCE REPORT
Universitätsklinikum RWTH Aachen

The Universitätsklinikum RWTH Aachen (University Hospital Aachen) has always …
… combined theory and practice within large-scale architectural structures: research and teaching closely interact here with patient care and treatment. The fact that modern medical technology and patient-oriented comfort are not mutually exclusive is also evident in the interior design, whose most eye-catching feature is the carpet – a custom woven product that ANKER has been manufacturing for the hospital complex since the early 2000s.
It’s remarkably unconventional yet essential – the Universitätsklinikum RWTH Aachen, designed by Weber, Brand & Partner in 1971 and designated a historical monument since 2008. With a net usable area of approximately 130,000 square meters, it is not only one of the largest hospitals in Germany and Europe’s largest single university hospital building, but it also houses all 36 specialty clinics, 33 institutes, as well as the teaching and research facilities of the RWTH Aachen University Medical Faculty.
The hospital area has about 1,400 beds, treating around 50,000 inpatients and an additional 200,000 outpatients annually.
